Volunteerism-Why is it Important?*
*Exerpt From the CGS Parent Handbook
One of the most obvious differences between Clover Garden and other public schools is the request that families provide 4 hours of volunteer time per month to the school. Clover Garden is truly a family focused school, and everyone benefits if the entire family is involved in the child's education. Beyond this, however, there is financial reason as well. Unlike traditional district schools, charter schools in North Carolina do not receive funding to cover the cost of securing a facility or providing transportation. In our state, a conventional public school is allocated $8434 per pupil to operate. A charter school receives $7234 per pupil, or 86% of what a traditional school is allocated. Clover Garden is responsible for funding all costs related to the running of the school, including the financial support of the actual building and grounds (construction and facility purchases and loans, as well as all upkeep). Clover Garden also purchases, staffs, and maintains their own busses. Due to this, it is vital that families volunteer to help make up the $1200 per pupil difference. Every hour spent helping out in
the classroom or office, cleaning or weeding, working a book fair, or manning a concession stand is like earning money for our school.

Volunteering for Individual Teachers
If you would rather volunteer just for your child's teacher, please email that teacher (see Faculty and Staff) individually. Be aware that many of the teachers welcome any-and-all volunteers (not just their class parents), BUT, please give them notice ahead of time. It is usually not possible for them to pull together something at the last minute.
Lists of Potential Volunteers
Parents were asked to fill out a "volunteer's interest" form at the beginning of the school year and a database of potential volunteers was created from that information. If you need a list of interested volunteers for any projects, you can request a list of volunteers by clicking on the following link.
