Chemistry

Class Objectives

We are pleased to announce Clover Garden's Chemistry program for the 2009-2010 school year.  Students entering the Chemistry program are expected to meet any math and algebra pre-requisite as this course will include significant work with calculations and formulas.  It will follow the North Carolina Standard Course of study and include laboratory activities that will provide practical laboratory skills used in the industry.  In 2009-2010, this course will be taught as an honors course which will include more rigor and prepare students for college chemistry coursework.

The chemistry course encourages students to continue their investigation of the structure of matter along with chemical reactions and the conservation of energy in these reactions. Inquiry is applied to the study of the transformation, composition, structure, and properties of substances. The course focuses on basic chemical concepts and incorporates activities that promote investigations to reinforce the concepts. The curriculum includes inquiry into the following content areas:

  • Structure of atoms.
  • Structure and properties of matter.
  • Chemical reactions.
  • Conservation of energy and matter.
  • Interaction of energy and matter.

Materials for this course

3 ring binder with tab dividers
Notebook paper
1 composition book
Graph paper
Pens - blue or black ink
4x6" index cards

Laboratory Safety and Requirements:

Safety of our kids is of UTMOST priority when dealing with any lab situation.  Students will be assigned glassware, tools, equipment, and safety equipment for their own personal use throughout the year.  Students will be responsible for any accidental breakage that occurs outside of normal wear.  Students will be required to have a pair of closed toed shoes for all laboratory experiments and all hair will have to be pulled back to reduce any accidental injuries.
